Uncover the Culture & History of Xiamen

Standard DreamTrip
Explore South Putuo Temple, Hulishan Fortress & other popular sites in China’s port city of Xiamen — plus, take a ferry to Gulangyu Island to visit Shuzhuang Garden & more!
Book by November 12.

About Your Trip

Journey to Xiamen, China, a place steeped in must-see historical sites and natural scenery. Prepare to be wowed by the fascinating culture and history of the area during 2 extensive full-day tours of Xiamen and Gulangyu Island.

Your adventure begins at Xiamen’s South Putuo Temple at the base of Wulao Mountain. Built during the Tang dynasty, the temple includes several buildings and halls decorated with Buddha-inspired statues, murals and sculptures. Then, marvel at the natural beauty of lush Wanshi Botanical Garden before visiting Zhongshan Road Old City Quarter. Before the day is over, you’ll have time to shop along Zhongshan Pedestrian Street — the perfect place to pick out a souvenir!

The excitement continues with a ferry ride to pedestrian-only Gulangyu Island, where you can walk through mythical alleys and take in colonial buildings. You’ll check out Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden, a lovely villa full of natural beauty and home of the famous Gulangyu Piano Museum. Back in Xiamen, you’ll stop by historic Hulishan Fortress that stands majestically with cannons that point toward the sea. Your fabulous tour ends with a walk along a wooden walkway at Island Ring Road, a 19-mile (31-kilometer) stretch of parks and attractions.

What we love:

• The highest spot in Xiamen at 305 feet (93 meters), Sunlight Rock is a popular place for impressive panoramic views.
• Hulishan Fortress comprises a cannon that holds the honor of the oldest and largest coastal cannon on the original site in the world by Guinness World Records™.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

Xiamen is located on the southeastern coast of China across a strait from Taiwan. Rolling hills, pristine beaches, ancient temples and fascinating architecture make Xiamen one of the most enjoyable holiday destinations in the country.

The city’s center is on Xiamen Island and it extends to Gulangyu Island and the districts of Jimei and Haicang on the mainland. Gulangyu Island, known for its colonial architecture and beautiful scenery, can be reached by ferry from downtown. Majestic Shuzhuang Garden rests in the southern part of the island. Its Canghai Garden (“garden hiding the sea”) features a high wall with a garden on one side and a spectacular ocean view on the other.

Visitors interested in heritage and culture can also travel to Fujian Tulou (a drive of about 2 hours once you cross to the mainland). This location of earthen houses built between the 15th and 20th centuries is a UNESCO World Heritage site as an impressive example of a preserved human settlement.
